There's a moment, every year, when fashion stops being fashion and becomes something else. Something bigger, louder, harder to ignore. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielitalia.com/fashion/met-gala-2026-dress-code-tema-fashion-is-art-significato" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Met Gala</a> is that moment. And when the theme is Fashion Is Art, allow us to raise the bar: we're not interested in the clothes of the present. We're interested in those that have changed the very shape of things.
We won't see these ten looks on the carpet tonight. They're too radical, too definitively themselves to be reduced to a red carpet moment. But that's exactly why they deserve to be here.
01. Alexander McQueen SS 2001 &mdash; The arena
The catwalk as a battlefield. Clothes as armor. The body as a territory to be conquered or defended. Lee McQueen's "Voss" collection is perhaps the most theatrical and brutally beautiful moment in the history of contemporary fashion. Models locked in a mirrored box, the show opening without an audience, the finale featuring a woman in a moth-infested glass cage. It was spectacle, it was art, it was disruption.

02. Comme des Gar&ccedil;ons SS 1997 &mdash; The Body as Landscape
Rei Kawakubo doesn't design clothes. She designs questions. And her 1997 collection "Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body" remains the most radical question fashion has ever posed: what would happen if we redesigned the contours of the human body? The padding inserts beneath the celadon silk weren't deformations, they were proposals. A rewriting of anatomy as a poetic act. Pure sculpture .

03. Iris van Herpen Couture AW 2017 &mdash; Physics as raw material
There's a point where couture and theoretical physics stop talking to each other and start to become one. Iris van Herpen found it. This collection from almost a decade ago is probably the moment when fashion came closest to mathematics without losing its soul. Dresses that seem like simulations of natural phenomena, waves, crystallizations.

04. Schiaparelli Couture SS 2023 &mdash; Surrealism has never been so literal
A black dress. A lemon yellow ribbed bustier that cinched the waist until it redefined it. And then the flowers&mdash;sunflowers, buttercups, rust-colored gerberas&mdash;that rose from the bust to the shoulder like a garden that has decided to take over. 07. Christian Lacroix Couture FW 1998 &mdash; Extravagance as a discipline
There are designers who build universes. Lacroix built unique ones. Baroque, sensual, overflowing with color and history, never vulgar because they were born from a boundless visual culture and an indestructible sense of beauty. The Fall 1998 couture collection is one of those moments when French fashion reminded the entire world why the word "extraordinaire" exists.

08. Balenciaga Couture 1955 &mdash; Architecture before it became a clich&eacute;
Cristobal Balenciaga didn't design clothes. He constructed forms in space. His creations of the 1950s were architectural solutions before they were sartorial. Structures that existed independently of the body that wore them. In 1955, his work was at its peak.

09. Versace SS 1991 &mdash; Pop art printed on silk
Gianni Versace was the only designer who could take the liberty of printing Warhol on a dress and making it couture. Spring 1991 was a declaration of love for American pop art, expressed with all the tools of Italian craftsmanship.
