L’Officiel Philippines speaks with showrunner Mike Flanagan and stars Summer H. Howell and Samantha Sloyan about why the 2026 Prime Video adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie is as relevant as it is revealing.

The 2020s have given us plenty to be anxious about. Artificial intelligence might take our jobs, our phones know more about us than our closest friends, and the internet has somehow become both a place to exist and a place to perform existing. Add the creeping suspicion that every embarrassing thing you do could end up online before you even get home, and suddenly, high school sounds more like a psychological endurance test.
Enter Carrie, a story about teenage misery, social cruelty, and what happens when the wrong people discover that the quiet girl they have been tormenting can do considerably more than cry in a shower.

For his 2026 adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic, showrunner Mike Flanagan takes a story that has haunted audiences for nearly five decades and gives it a decidedly contemporary nightmare: growing up in a world where humiliation is no longer confined to the school hallway. It can be filmed, uploaded, shared, dissected, and replayed long after the original moment has passed. The bullies go home, but the bullying doesn't. Your classmates become your audience, your phone becomes an accomplice, and a bad day can turn into a public spectacle before you have had the chance to process it yourself. If that sounds less like supernatural horror and more like a Tuesday on the internet, well, that is precisely the point.
Flanagan, a horror auteur behind some of your favorite frightful shows, is not interested in revisiting Carrie simply because the story is iconic. His eight-episode Prime Video series, which premiered on October 7, 2026, is interested in what the story can tell us now, when cruelty has acquired a comment section and teenagers must navigate an increasingly unforgiving digital world.
“I wasn’t sure there was a reason to revisit this story,” Flanagan admits, explaining that earlier adaptations had already done the material justice. What changed his mind was the story's startling relevance to contemporary life. “This wasn’t about nostalgia and doing something again, it was about telling a story that was vital to today.”
And vital it is. Because beneath the telekinesis, the blood, and the looming promise of prom-night disaster is a more uncomfortable question: how much cruelty can a person endure before the world starts to look different to them?

A Carrie White We Haven’t Met Before

The most interesting thing about Flanagan's Carrie is that it doesn't begin with a girl who is already broken. It begins with a girl who is, in many ways, still wonderfully intact.
After the sudden death of her father, Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) leaves the confines of the home she has shared with her mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan), and enters public high school for the first time. She is curious about the world, eager to make friends, and optimistic about what lies beyond her front door. She is also discovering that she possesses telekinetic abilities, which makes adolescence complicated enough before anyone decides to make her the school's next public spectacle.
Without giving too much away, the series follows Carrie as she navigates school politics, viral bullying, and the increasingly frightening realization that the world she has been so eager to enter may not be particularly kind to her. Across eight episodes, Flanagan expands the familiar story into a portrait of an entire community, examining the small decisions, private insecurities, and moments of complicity that propel its characters toward an inevitable reckoning.
The distinction matters. In earlier versions, Carrie's vulnerability is often apparent from the outset. Here, her openness makes what follows even more painful to watch. She hasn't yet learned to anticipate the worst in people. She simply assumes they might be nice.
“I wanted our Carrie White to be a character we hadn't met before,” Flanagan explains. Rather than introducing her in a state of trauma and fear, he describes his Carrie as “open to the world, earnest, curious and untraumatized.”
That decision gives the series its emotional engine. We aren't merely watching a bullied teenager discover the extent of her powers. We're watching someone discover, in real time, what people are capable of doing to one another. And in a world where teenagers can be judged by a video taken out of context, a cruel group chat, or a photograph that refuses to disappear, the prospect of being different has acquired an entirely new set of consequences.

The Mother-Daughter Relationship That Changes Everything

If Carrie is a girl approaching the world with the sort of optimism that makes you want to protect her from it, Margaret is a woman who has spent years preparing for precisely the opposite. Having lived in isolation with her daughter for 15 years, Margaret views the outside world with suspicion and fear. Her instinct is to shield Carrie from danger, even if the very methods she uses to protect her threaten to suffocate the girl she loves. It is a familiar horror setup, but Flanagan complicates the relationship by making love its foundation.
“Yeah, well, when it comes to our relationship, it's rooted in love,” Howell tells L'Officiel Philippines. “Mike wanted that from the start to change our characters, and it just changes the story so much.”
For Howell, the decision to make Carrie genuinely excited about school was essential to understanding the character. This is a teenager who wants to meet people her own age, make friends, and experience life beyond the familiar boundaries of home. The cruelty she encounters therefore feels less like a confirmation of her worst fears than a brutal lesson she was never prepared to learn.
“She's excited and open, eager, and just kind, wanting to meet people for the first time besides her parents, gets to know kids her own age, and go to school,” Howell says. “So it makes it a little more heartbreaking when you see how she's treated when she gets there.”

Sloyan, meanwhile, approaches Margaret as a mother whose love has become inseparable from her fear of losing control. She isn't simply a monstrous parent waiting to be exposed as the villain. She is a deeply isolated woman who believes the world is dangerous and that she alone understands how to keep her daughter safe.
“She's such a monster as we meet her in other iterations,” Sloyan says of previous portrayals of Margaret. “So this, to see her as a mother who's terrified really changes her.”
The result is a relationship that feels more intimate, and considerably more uncomfortable, than a straightforward battle between a repressive mother and a rebellious daughter. Margaret's intentions may come from love, but love doesn't automatically make her choices right. Carrie, meanwhile, has to figure out where her mother's protection ends and her own life begins.
Sloyan sees Margaret's ferocity as a response to the possibility of harm coming to the person she loves most. Her fear makes her controlling, and her determination to protect Carrie pushes her toward increasingly extreme behaviour.
It's an especially compelling dynamic because neither woman fully understands what the other is experiencing. Carrie sees possibility where Margaret sees danger. Margaret sees threats that Carrie has yet to learn how to recognise. As Sloyan puts it, “Carrie meets the world with curiosity and hope, Margaret with suspicion and fear.”
The contrast gives the series something beyond its supernatural premise: a recognisable portrait of what happens when the people who love us most struggle to let us become ourselves.

When Bullying Becomes a Community Sport

Of course, the White household isn't the only place where fear dictates behaviour. At school, Carrie encounters a social ecosystem where popularity is currency, belonging is conditional, and cruelty can be disguised as a joke so that nobody has to take responsibility for it.
The smartphone is the perfect weapon for this environment. In Flanagan's adaptation, bullying doesn't stop when the final bell rings. Social media allows it to travel beyond the classroom, gathering spectators and turning a private humiliation into a communal event. The audience is no longer limited to the students who happened to be there. Anyone with a screen can participate, whether by sharing the footage, adding a comment, or watching without intervening.
It is this expansion of the story that makes the eight-episode format particularly effective. Rather than reducing the school's bullies to a collection of conveniently wicked teenagers, the series spends time with the people around Carrie, exploring the pressures and insecurities that shape their behaviour.
Howell appreciates that her character isn't the only one given room to evolve. “She goes on a huge arc,” she tells L'Officiel Philippines. “She's got so much more time to show that arc and emotion.”
She also points to the show's refusal to make its characters entirely one-dimensional. “Like Chris, she's not just evil. You see why she makes those choices, even though you're hoping she chooses something else. It's just the snowball effect. And you see why people act the way they do.”
Sloyan agrees that Flanagan's writing encourages a particular kind of empathy by making his characters feel recognisably human. “I think Mike is so excellent at writing people that we recognize and can see ourselves in,” she says. “And because of that, I think it really opens us up to so much empathy and understanding.”
It is an uncomfortable proposition, especially for anyone who has ever reassured themselves that they would never be the bully. What if cruelty isn't always the work of an obvious villain? What if it also comes from wanting to impress the right people, protect a social position, avoid becoming the next target, or simply deciding that somebody else's humiliation is not your problem? The series is interested in those moments, too. Not just the spectacular acts of violence, but the smaller choices that make them possible.

The Horror of Being a Teenager, Amplified

There is a reason Carrie has endured as a coming-of-age story. Adolescence is already a period of extraordinary vulnerability, when identity is still taking shape and the desire to belong can feel like a matter of survival. You are learning who you are while everyone around you appears to be deciding who you should be.
Social media has only made that process more public. There are now metrics for popularity, permanent records of awkwardness, and an endless stream of images against which to measure yourself. Even the act of being a teenager has become something that can be watched, rated, and circulated.
Flanagan's adaptation understands that the terror is not technology itself, but what people do with it. A phone can connect people, but it can also give cruelty a wider reach and its perpetrators a convenient sense of distance from the person they hurt.
The director's concerns are also personal. He speaks about his anxiety as a parent of three children growing up in a world that seems to become crueler every year. He worries that this behaviour is being normalised, accepted as something inevitable rather than something people can choose to challenge. “I think, unfortunately, human cruelty is showing no signs of slowing down,” he says. “It feels like it's escalating, because I think we continue to normalize it.”
It is also why Carrie's developing powers matter beyond the spectacle of supernatural horror. Her telekinesis becomes part of a much larger question about power itself: who gets to wield it, who is denied it, and what happens when someone who has spent her life being powerless discovers she no longer has to be.
For Howell, the challenge was to capture the confusion of that discovery alongside Carrie's emotional transformation. As her understanding of the world changes, so does her relationship with her abilities. She must reckon with what they mean, whether they can be used for good, and what it means to finally have agency in a world that has repeatedly denied her any.

That tension is what makes Carrie's coming-of-age journey so compelling. Growing up means discovering that the world is more complicated than you thought. For Carrie, it also means discovering that she is.
But Flanagan's interest in the story has always extended beyond the bloodshed. What makes this adaptation distinctive is its insistence that the horror isn't simply a matter of supernatural forces or one girl's extraordinary abilities. It is also about ordinary people, the choices they make, and the damage they can inflict when empathy becomes inconvenient.
For Howell, the message is straightforward, if easier said than done. “I hope it is to be kind,” she says. “It is so easy to be mean to fit in, even if that's not who you are. Especially with social media and people hiding behind their screens. It takes bravery to be kind and we need more of that.”
Sloyan hopes audiences will leave the series thinking about the responsibility that comes with their choices. Even when a tragedy seems inevitable, she suggests, it is built from a series of decisions made by people who have opportunities to act differently.
Flanagan is similarly interested in the seemingly insignificant moments that shape our lives. In our conversation, he says he hopes viewers will come away with a renewed appreciation for the everyday choices between kindness and cruelty, including the ones that appear too small to matter.
His wish is simple: that people might pause for an extra couple of seconds before deciding how to treat someone else.
That might sound like an unusually earnest takeaway from a story synonymous with high-school horror. But perhaps that is what makes Carrie so effective in 2026. The series doesn't pretend that empathy can undo every harm, or that understanding a person's circumstances automatically absolves them of responsibility. Instead, it asks us to recognise the human being on the other side of our actions before the consequences become impossible to ignore.
Flanagan believes stories about misunderstood people will remain important for as long as cruelty persists. And in a culture that increasingly rewards instant reactions, public judgment, and the easy thrill of tearing someone down, a story that asks us to reconsider our own capacity for unkindness feels less like a moral lecture than a necessary intervention.
“I hope people can see the demonstration of kindness in each other, and the tragedy that is inevitable, if we don't reach each other with empathy and kindness,” he says. And if a horror series can make us think twice before pressing post, perhaps that is a genuinely terrifying, and genuinely worthwhile, achievement.
