Many people&#39;s dream is to travel around the world. But what costs should you expect for this?

Visit distant countries, get to know other cultures and ideally do so continuously and for several months. <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/travel/gen-z-travel-destinations-vacation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A trip around the world</a> is on the to-do list for many people. However, very few people probably realise their dream. One point here is certainly the money factor. But how much does a trip around the world actually cost?
You often hear about amounts around &euro;15,000 to &euro;20,000 for a trip lasting several months without a lot of frills. Whether this is actually true and what you get for it also aroused our curiosity. We have calculated the whole thing in more detail and explained the individual costs per person. Of course, the amount depends on various factors and varies greatly.

<h2 style="text-align: left;">The costs before starting</h2>

Before you even get started, you have to think about equipment, health insurance and any vaccinations you might need. International health insurance is extremely important. Statutory health insurance does not cover such trips at home. International health insurance starts at around &euro;1.50 per day. For very good insurance cover for a year-long trip around the world, you can expect to pay around &euro;500.
Before traveling you should find out about possible vaccinations. It is important to note that some vaccinations require a longer lead time with multiple vaccination appointments. Six months in advance, you should decide which vaccinations you need or want to enter the respective country and make appointments. Common vaccinations include hepatitis A + B, yellow fever, typhoid or rabies. The costs vary depending on the destination and the vaccination required. On average you can expect to pay between &euro;200 and &euro;700. Unless the health insurance company covers part or all of the costs.
You also need an additional budget for a visa, possibly an extension of your passport, equipment, an international driving license, etc. As a rule of thumb, you can calculate around 20% of the total costs for the start-up costs.

<h2 style="text-align: left;">Travel duration, destinations and meals</h2>

The duration of the trip around the world has a significant impact on the overall costs. Sure: the longer you travel, the more money you use. Especially if you spend a lot of time in expensive countries. Countries in <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/travel/albanian-beaches-visit-ksamil-albania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Europe</a>, North America and <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/travel/the-great-barrier-reef-australia-the-largest-coral-reef-system-in-the-world" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia</a> tend to be more expensive than destinations in Asia, South America or Africa. In addition, there is the standard of comfort that you want to have. Hostels and shared rooms are of course a lot cheaper than <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/travel/cheval-blanc-st-barth-unikalnyy-opyt-guerlain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5-star hotels</a>. However, there are enough middle-class comforts in simple double rooms with private bathrooms or cheap Airbnb apartments.
You can also save or spend a lot of money on food. Cooking yourself, street food and simple restaurants that are not located directly in the tourist center are the cheapest diet option when travelling around the world.
Transportation is another significant cost. If you fly from country to country, the costs increase significantly. Local means of transport such as buses or trains are cheaper.
As a rough guide, you can expect &euro;1,000 per month. Depending on which country you are traveling to next and the level of comfort you want to enjoy, you will sometimes exceed this budget and sometimes need less.

Of course, you also want to do activities in the planned destination countries. After all, you don't travel around the world for free only to experience nothing. An extra budget must be included for the &ldquo; activities &rdquo; factor. Many sights can be visited for free. Others have hefty entry fees. Guided tours with a guide are sometimes better, but sometimes exploring on your own is quite exciting. It's best to plan roughly in advance what things you want to experience in each country and how much money you'll need for them.
A slightly more creative sightseeing idea is cooking courses that you can take in the country you are traveling to. These are often locals (e.g. via Airbnb ) who offer cooking courses with local specialties. Not only do you get to know the locals and their regional diet, you also save yourself a meal in your food budget. Since this cost factor is very much related to the interests of the world traveller, you can only roughly estimate costs between &euro;1,000 and &euro;4,000 .

<h2 style="text-align: left;">Additional costs</h2>

There are a few additional costs that may arise during the trip around the world and must be taken into account individually. In non-Euro countries, fees apply when withdrawing money from your bank account. To avoid having to pay these, it is highly advisable to have a credit card with free worldwide cash withdrawals. You also have to take ongoing costs in your home country into account. Contracts that are not required can be terminated and other ongoing costs can be reduced or eliminated entirely.
