The eternal legacy of Friends : beyond the laughing memories or the impact of costumes on our daily lives, the American series is a time capsule that we continue to open with nostalgia and laughter.

At the end of October, the surprising death of actor <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/culture/matthew-perry-known-as-chandler-bing-from-friends-passes-away-at-54" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Matthew Perry</a> plunged much of the world into an inevitable and nostalgic review of Friends , the American sitcom that, over the course of a decade and ten seasons, allowed us to closely follow the lives of Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe and Joey, a group of young friends in New York. From its premiere in 1994 until today, the cultural legacy of the series is immeasurable : episodes so iconic that they are part of the general collective unconscious or typical phrases of the characters that we repeat as if they were our own.
But a more subtle aspect of its impact is the wardrobe . Debra McGuire, director of that department, was, in fact, a painter &ndash; she had no experience in fashion at the time of filming the pilot. She began by defining the colour palette of each character, always with their life stories as a guideline: Monica, born and raised in the Big Apple, wears darker colours than Rachel, the &ldquo;rich girl&rdquo; from the suburbs obsessed with magazines and fashion shows. . Ross, the scientific professor, prefers tweed and textures, while Joey, the struggling actor, conveys a special sex appeal with a few basic clothes and a black leather jacket (worn, of course, because his salary would not allow him to have a new). Chandler, for his part, has a vintage feel with his oversized shirts, casual outfits and, since he is the only one of the group with a stable corporate job, the occasional appearance in a suit. The true queen of retro, however, is Phoebe, whose eccentric personality and upbringing are manifested through a seventies look of prints, crazy accessories and creative hairstyles.

Therein lies the true beauty of the program. Unlike other <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/portraits/jeanne-damas-rouje-nyc-store-opening-french-girl-style-fashion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> shows of the time (sorry, Sex and the City ), and despite being a fictional comedy, Friends always remained fundamentally realistic. The characters not only face the everyday challenges of modern life&mdash;work, love, family, purpose&mdash;just like us, but they also look just like us doing it. Many of the clothes from the series remain, to this day, in our closets: plenty of denim , genderless garments, more formal pieces that we wear to work and our favourite dirty Sunday t-shirt. That's why Friends is a time capsule that we will continue to return to again and again for inspiration, memories and laughter. Like with old friends.
