Long confined to beaches and swimming pools, swim shorts are breaking free this summer from their beach vocation to become one of the most desirable pieces in the wardrobe.

Every summer brings its share of supposedly essential trends. This season, however, one item stands out with almost undeniable presence: swim shorts . Mini or knee-length, fitted or heavily inspired by surfer style, they're no longer confined to the sand. They've become a staple in everyday looks, leaving the beach for the city and establishing themselves as a true fashion statement.
This rise in popularity, however, is not entirely new. The history of the women's swimsuit is marked by transformations that subtly reflect the evolution of social mores and attitudes towards the body. In the 19th century, women still bathed in long woolen garments, the famous "bathing gowns," designed to cover much of the body. The catwalks played a significant role in this shift in perspective. Far from being mere functional garments, they contributed to a broader reflection on beauty, the body, and how to dress in a constantly evolving world.
At <a href="https://www.lofficiel.com/fashion-week/chez-dries-van-noten-le-vestiaire-masculin-sabandonne-a-la-reverie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dries Van Noten</a> , for Spring/Summer 2026, Julian Klausner placed summer at the heart of his first collection for the house. An ode to warmth, light and that "primitive energy of a sunbeam," but also to the simple pleasures of summer. Amidst sheer dresses, stripes and graphic prints,&nbsp;swim shorts rekindled this desire for light, free and spontaneous clothing.

It must be said that the context is particularly favourable for them. As temperatures rise and wardrobes seek more than ever to combine comfort and style, swim shorts tick all the boxes. Made from nylon, they dry quickly, crease very little and are now available in an endless array of colours and patterns. Their new strength lies above all in their ability to blur the lines between beachwear and everyday dressing.
The most stylish silhouettes play with contrasts. Short, boy-short styles can be worn with a matching bikini top, a lightweight shirt, sunglasses and a few pieces of gold jewellery. At the other end of the spectrum, loose-fitting board shorts, once reserved for surfers, gain sophistication when paired with a structured jacket or preppy-inspired pieces.
For a more graphic look, opt for prints: colourful patterns, polka dots, stripes or spirals transform swim shorts into the centrepiece of an outfit. Simply tone them down with a monochrome top, loose, flowing hair and a pair of minimalist sandals. In the evening, a few accessories are all it takes to transform the look.
Perhaps this is where the true charm of the trend lies: swim shorts no longer require a holiday to be worn. They adapt to the time, the place and the mood. They can be sporty, sophisticated, retro, sexy or delightfully nonchalant. They borrow the most relaxed codes from menswear while maintaining a distinctly contemporary freedom of style. There is no longer any need to choose between fashion and swimming. Swim shorts take care of both.
