In the 1980s, the global luxury market boomed, and luxury brands began to dominate the men&#39;s eyewear trend. Gucci took the lead in infusing its iconic retro aesthetic into its designs, retaining the quality that the brand has maintained since its founding in 1921 on its heavy square acetate frames, while cleverly incorporating the oversized silhouettes that were popular in the 1980s.

In the 1990s, Tom Ford took luxury to the extreme, using precious materials such as buffalo horn and creating oversized frames, which quickly became a must-have for Hollywood stars on the red carpet.

Contemporary: Crafts, Technology and Cross-disciplinary Innovation

In the contemporary era, men&#39;s eyewear design has shifted towards a balance between craftsmanship and personal taste, with luxury brands extending their core technologies to the frames. The Orizzonte collection from Italian menswear brand Zegna draws inspiration from the brand&#39;s classic fabric craftsmanship, wrapping supple leather around high-end metal frames and temples, continuing the brand&#39;s consistent gentlemanly style and showcasing understated luxury.

On the other hand, luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, under the design of Pharrell Williams, launched the LV Super Vision men&#39;s sunglasses, drawing inspiration from the art of photography. They offer four silhouettes: round, square, rectangular, and aviator style, with raised silver frame details, injecting a highly stylish and individualistic expression into the classic design.

In 2025, Ray-Ban partnered with tech giant Meta to launch the Ray-Ban Meta x Coperni limited edition smart glasses, featuring a transparent black frame and grey mirrored lenses, and equipped with functions such as hands-free recording, becoming a model of the fusion of technology and fashion.

This year, the brand also appointed fashion innovation pioneer and multi-talented artist A$AP Rocky as its first creative director, launching several groundbreaking collections. Following the &quot;Blacked Out&quot; and &quot;Mega&quot; collections, the &quot;Wayfarer Puffer&quot; collection was launched in November, incorporating inflatable frames to create a sculptural, three-dimensional visual effect. The Crystal Edition is set with crystals and features gold metal trim, while the Diamond Edition is set with a 1.65-carat natural diamond. The collection will first be worn by A$AP Rocky himself at the 2025 Met Gala, revitalizing the younger consumer demographic.
