Part act of rebellion and part escapism, the “whimsyfication” of makeup and skincare routines is more than just slapping bejewelled stickers on your lippies and face.

Do you remember filling up your sticker book with colourful rhinestone stickers? Then, eventually sticking them on your earlobe, nails, notebooks, or pretty much anywhere you thought could use a little sparkle? There was a genuine, childlike glee in these “cute” little accents. They were not particularly useful, nor did they need to be.&nbsp;
Cut to 2026, and somehow, we're in a time warp.

It's not like nostalgia hasn't been a trend, or even a state of being, for the past couple of years. We've cycled through Y2K, '90s minimalism, and every possible iteration of our collective childhoods. But this era seems to show us the most romanticised version of girlhood yet. Everything is a little pinker, a little cuter, a little more embellished. And now, even our beauty products are getting the treatment.
Lip balms are being bedazzled. Compact mirrors are covered in gems. Rhinestones are finding their way onto nails, faces, phone cases, perfume bottles, coffee cups, and pretty much anything else that can withstand a little adhesive. It's adorable, sure. It's also incredibly Instagram- and TikTok-approved. But why is it all coming to a fever pitch now?
Probably blame the trend cycle.
And Kylie Jenner.
<h3>Everything Comes Back Around</h3>
People have often said that trends come and go. But why do they “come” into our consciousness in the first place — and when do we collectively decide that something is definitely “gone”?
Fashion has always operated in cycles of imitation, reinvention, and nostalgia, but social media has made those cycles considerably faster. Something no longer needs to trickle down from the runway, through celebrities, magazines, and eventually into the mainstream. Today, a look can go from a niche corner of TikTok to everyone's For You Page almost overnight.
There is also something to be said about accessibility. A trend becomes a&nbsp;trend&nbsp;when people can actually participate in it. Social contagion research has shown that we are more likely to adopt behaviors when we see other people around us doing the same thing, particularly when participation becomes visible and socially validated. In other words, seeing someone do something makes it easier to imagine yourself doing it, too.
This is where influence comes in.
The influencer era may supposedly be over, but trends still need people to influence us into wanting them. And while the new wave of KOLs has created an increasingly saturated influencer bracket, the OGs still have a measured effect.&nbsp;Case in point: Kylie Jenner would like to challenge the notion that influencer power is dead — with a bejeweled plastic cup, a rhinestone manicure, and a very bedazzled birthday cake.
<h3>The Birthday Girl That Blew Up the Bedazzle Movement</h3>

To be clear, Kylie did not invent the bedazzling trend.
Rhinestone customisation had already been bubbling online, particularly across Instagram and TikTok, alongside the resurgence of Y2K styling, gem nails, body crystals, and DIY customisation. By spring 2026, beauty publications were already calling out rhinestone-heavy nail art as a growing trend, with Kylie herself sporting crystal embellishments at Coachella.
But then came her birthday.
For her 29th, Kylie Jenner hosted a pink, princess-themed celebration complete with tiaras, feathers, and cakes covered in colourful rhinestones. It was maximalist, kitschy, and — most importantly — extremely easy to copy.
And perhaps that is the secret to why her influence still works.&nbsp;With more than 380 million followers on Instagram and her own beauty empire, Kylie occupies a unique position somewhere between celebrity, entrepreneur, influencer, and market leader.&nbsp;
And this particular "accessible" trend came with a remarkably low price of entry.
It's not like you need to sell your soul for a Birkin or drop the equivalent of your rent on a Blazy Chanel. You can have loose change to buy yourself a cute little bejewelled sticker sheet. Suddenly, you can have a tiny piece of the Kylie universe without actually having Kylie money.
<h3>Everyone Wants to Belong. Everyone Wants to Be Different.</h3>
This also comes at a time when customisation is all the rage.
From phone charms and personalised bags to nail art and monogrammed everything, we seem increasingly interested in making mass-produced things feel like they belong specifically to us. We want to be individualistic, but we also want to belong to something — be it a movement, aesthetic, or online community.

Humans are lonely creatures, after all. And that loneliness is only emphasised by social media and the strange parasocial relationships we form with people we have never met. We watch their lives, copy their routines, buy the products they recommend, and increasingly use their visual language to construct our own.
So when you can participate in something that thousands (or millions) of other people are also doing, there is a certain comfort in it.
You get to say,&nbsp;I'm part of this.
But you also get to say,&nbsp;This is mine.
That is perhaps why bedazzling is so perfectly suited to the current climate. Everyone can buy the same rhinestone stickers, but nobody has to stick them in exactly the same place.&nbsp;And in today's increasingly cynical, divisive, and troubling world, perhaps we do need — and deserve — a little break from the burnout of constantly being online.
<h3>The Whimsyfication of Everything</h3>
Whimsymaxxing, as the internet coined it back in 2025, isn't necessarily new. In fact, the impulse to make everything a little more excessive has been around for decades.
Look back at the kitsch maximalism of the '90s: Lisa Frank's technicolour fantasy worlds, Swarovski's crystal-covered campaigns, the rhinestone-heavy aesthetics of pop stars, and the ultra-femme visual language that told us more was, quite literally, more.
Then came the pendulum swing.
For a while, minimalism was the aspiration. Normcore. Quiet luxury. The clean girl aesthetic. The “no-makeup” makeup look. Everything was pared down, neutral, effortless. Even our skincare routines were marketed as an exercise in discipline and optimization.
But perhaps we have simply had enough of optimising.
Whimsymaxxing is essentially the internet's answer to all of that. Its appeal is not really about rhinestones. It's about deliberately injecting unnecessary joy into everyday life.&nbsp;It's nostalgia, yes. But it is nostalgia filtered through a generation that simply wants to relive the feeling. There is something comforting about recreating the things that once made us happy before everything became so complicated.
As the price of everything we actually want continues to inflate — from that statement runway heel to the must-have anti-aging cream — we are looking for alternative ways to inject a little dopamine into the day-to-day.
So go ahead. Bedazzle your lip balm. Put a rhinestone on your compact. Stick a butterfly on your phone.
It's not going to change the world.&nbsp;But for a tiny moment, it might make the world feel a little more fun.
